Listen to authentic Italian
Italian learners are always looking for new sources of Italian listening practice, and FluentU is one of the best. This subscription site offers videos for all levels of Italian, enhanced with quizzes, spaced repetition, and other tools to help you practice what you know and learn at your own pace.
Upon creating your account, you’ll be asked to choose a level and a daily goal (1 to 50 minutes per day); of course, these can be changed later. You can browse the 230 videos by level, topic, or format.
The three main levels are divided into two sub-levels, similar to CEFR levels:
- Arts and Entertainment
- Everyday Life
- Fashion & Style
- Food & Cuisine
- Health and Lifestyle
- Science and Technology
- Language Lessons
- Music Videos
- Talks / Speeches
The videos include subtitles and translations which can be turned off, so that you can choose exactly how much help you need. Other features include
- Spaced repetition vocabulary review
- Word lookups with real-world sentences
FluentU has a suite of tools for teachers including immersive video quizzes, assignment creation, and progress tracking.
FluentU Trial and Subscription
FluentU offers a free 14-day trial, but in order to obtain it you must choose a monthly or annual subscription and provide payment information. Of course, if you cancel within those two weeks, you won’t be charged.
As you can see in the screenshot above, while FluentU has videos for all levels, it’s particularly well suited for intermediate students, as nearly a thousand of the videos are intermediate 1 or intermediate 2. But whatever your level, there are useful videos, quizzes, and vocabulary features that can help you learn and practice, so it’s worth taking advantage of the free trial and seeing if it works for you.
If you are or want to be a polyglot, you’re in luck – in addition to Italian, your FluentU subscription offers unlimited access to the other 8 languages they offer: Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, and Spanish.
