Verbi irregolari con -urre
Italian has a few verbs with an irregular infinitive that ends in –urre, a contraction of the original infinitive ending –ucere. Many conjugations for these verbs are based on that original infinitive.
addurre | to add on | |
condurre | to conduct, lead
dedurre | to deduct | |
indurre | to induce | |
introdurre | to introduce, insert
produrre | to produce | |
ridurre | to reduce | |
sedurre | to seduce | |
tradurre | to translate |
How to conjugate –urre verbs
For the present tense, remove –urre and then add one of the following verb endings:*
Singular | Plural | ||||
1st person | io | -uco | noi | -uciamo
2nd person | tu | -uci | voi | -ucete
3rd person | lui | -uce | loro | -ucono |
Per esempio…
TRADURRE | Singular | Plural
1st person | io | traduco | noi | traduciamo
2nd person | tu | traduci | voi | traducete
3rd person | lui | traduce | loro | traducono |
* Another way to look at these conjugations, especially if you love grammar and etymology, is to figure out the original infinitive (e.g., tradurre traducere), then remove –ere and add the regular –ere verb endings:
Singular | Plural | ||||
1st person | io | -o | noi | -iamo
2nd person | tu | -i | voi | -ete
3rd person | lui | -e | loro | -ono |
The end result is the same but the logic of the conjugations is more evident. 🙂
