Verbi irregolari con –arre

Italian has a dozen verbs with an irregular infinitive that ends in –arre, a contraction of the original infinitive ending –aggere. Many conjugations for these verbs are based on that original infinitive.

astrarre   to abstract
attrarre   to attract
contrarre   to contract
detrarre   to deduct
distrarre   to distract
estrarre   to extract
pertrarre   to endure
protrarre   to protract
rattrarre   to sadden
ritrarre   to retract
sottrarre   to subtract
trarre   to deduce, infer

How to conjugate –arre verbs

For the present tense, remove –arre and then add one of the following verb endings – note that three of the grammatical persons have two different conjugations:

Singular      Plural
1st person     io -aggo   noi  -aiamo
-aggiamo
2nd person tu -ai
-aggi
  voi -aete
3rd person lui -ae
-agge
  loro -aggaono

1st person    io attraggo   noi  attraiamo
attraggiamo
2nd person tu attrai

3rd person lui attrae

  loro attraggono
