Aggettivi indefiniti

Indefinite adjectives describe nouns in a general or non-specific way. Many indefinite adjectives indicate a vague quantity.

Per esempio…

Mi piacciono tutte queste luci.   I like all of these lights.
Alcuni studenti sono in ritardo.   Some students are late.

Characteristics of indefinite adjectives

  1. Used in place of an article, not with one (except altro and certo)
  2. Placed directly in front of a noun
  3. Must agree with the noun in number and sometimes gender
  4. Many are identical to Italian indefinite pronouns

Using indefinite adjectives

+ Alcuni, diversi, and molti are always plural and have to agree with the noun in gender.

Per esempio…

Ho comprato alcuni libri.   I bought some books.
Abbiamo diverse domande.   We have several questions.
Molte persone sono arrivate presto.   Many people arrived early.

+ Altrocerto, and tutto each have four forms: they must agree with their nouns in gender and number.

Per esempio…

Vuole un’altra auto.   He wants another car.
Ho altre due domande.   I have two other questions.
Lei ha un certo fascino.   She has a certain charm.
Lo faccio tutti i giorni.   I do it every day.

+ Ciascun, ogni, qualche, qualsiasi, and qualunque are invariable and always singular in Italian, even if the English translation is plural.

Per esempio…

Ciascun bambino può scegliere un libro.   Each child can choose one book.
Ogni studente ha bisogno di un dizionario.   All students need a dictionary.
Potete prendere l’auto in qualsiasi momento.   You can take the car any time.
Possiamo incontrarci in qualsiasi giorno della settimana.   We can meet any day this week.
Dovremmo comprare qualche biglietto.   We should buy some tickets.
